John Grisham ventures out of the suspense field and onto the football field in this story of a once-great high school quarterback, Neely Crenshaw, who, years later, returns to the scene of his glory days to attend a memorial to his old coach, the controversial Eddie Rake--a man about whom Neely has decidedly mixed feelings. And those are what he has to come to terms with if he wants to bury the past and look forward to the future.

Bleachers by John Grisham
by: jadams5144 (121Feedback is 100 to 499) Review created: 09/01/08

I enjoyed listening to this CD very much. The story line was real and the characters were plausible. It created a town that many of the listeners have grown up in. A town where a sport or event took root and became something very special to the people who lived there. I strongly recommend this CD.

Takes you back to crisp falls of our youth.

I've been a John Grisham fan since "The Firm". While his new titles are quite different from his earlier thrillers, I enjoy his new turn.
"Bleachers" is a poignant, character-driven tale of a man whose past as a high school football star has shaped every facet of his life.
We meet his old teammates, old loves and old coaches. He comes to terms with the negative incidents that go along with the brutal sport of football. He learns the greater lessons of life.
I appreciate that Grisham's characters are not perfect, don't become perfect, and if they learn a lesson which helps them heal, then that is a pretty good story to listen to.

I love this audiobook. It was special to hear it read by John Grisham even though I read the book! It will bring tears to your eyes as grown men pay homage to their former, quite special, football coach.. It also allows them to lay to rest their former lives as heroes on and off the football field! It is wonderful!!

A Wonderful Football Story
by: colonnasteele (131Feedback is 100 to 499) Review created: 08/13/07

Bleachers by John Grisham is a great book. John Grisham is a master at weaving together stories, and this is one of his best. The story begins in a town called Messina, where football is everything. After coaching for many years, the former football coach, Rake, is slowly loosing his battle with cancer. Many of his players have come from all over to pay their respects to their coach, one in particular, named Neely Crenshaw, the former "All-American" quarterback who hasn't been back to Messina in a long time. Now Neely revisits old friends, remembers his glory days, and pays his respects to his coach. But he also must decide: Does he love or hate Coach Rake.

This book had nothing to do with lawyers! Just a nice story about some ex-high school football players, their coach and life in the small town they grew up in. Kept my interest throughout.

I decided to purchase the book because I love John Grisham and he narrated it himself. The story line was different than he other books but all the same, it was great. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to listen to books while traveling or for relaxing.

Not the story I expected. About people and how they deal with different situations in life. Based around High School football but not a sports story at all. Very good story line, clear, I liked the characters. It took me a while to warm up to a few of them, but their good points were there. All in all a good story.
