Format: DVD UPC: 786936145076 Rating: Rated PG-13 It is the late 1950s, but it might as well be the late 1850s in a small French town where everyone behaves as they should (supposedly), and attends church regularly. When a strong North wind blows through town, it brings the vivacious and mysterious Vianne (Juliette Binoche) and her young daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol). Vianne is soon the talk of the town: an unwed mother who declines to go to church and opens up a chocolate shop in the midst of Lent. Her good-natured, honorable personality... | More | Price: $1.00 - $12.99 List Price: $32.99 |

This town is quite into their religion and an outsider such as Vianne is frowned upon. They aren't too pleased when she opens up her Chocolatier during Lent. Then of course Johnny Depp and his band of gypsies come to town and befriend Vianne. This movie is heartwarming and sad all that same time. Definitely a movie for a girls night out.

Juliet Binoche stars as a mysterious woman with modern ideas that moves into a very conservative French town. She opens a chocolat shop, and freaks out alot of townspeople because it is during Lent.... perish the thought. Anyways, she slowly but surely wins over several daring souls that venture into her shop. This is a fantastic mood lifting story , hope you will check it out.

A treasure trove of emotions are revealed layer by layer in their lives and the lives they touch. The woman has a gift for chocolat, and opens a store in this new french town, their are some who embrace her, but most wait and see if she is accepted by the important people of the town. Sometimes provocative or shocking, but a story that warms the heart. One of my top 10 favorites.

The title didn't spark an interest because I had seen a foreign film years ago with the same or simular title and found it too ...boring, so I wasn't interested in watching this movie when it first came out. But while I was visiting my little sis (07/2007) she assigned it as my "homework assignment" one evening...can you tell she is a teacher?! Anyway, I watched it - twice! It is a love story that touched my heart and reminded me that love can be found even though we suffer adversity and trials. It took a few weeks of checking video stores, without luck, before I searched eBay and found a copy for my own. I highly recommend you add it to your video/DVD collection, as a must have for a mood lifter or just the romantic at heart!

Other than that - it's a wonderful story of a wandering Gypsy type mother and her daughter who gets dragged along on every whim her mother has. The townspeople are portrayed as very conservative folk by talented actors. Great movie and even greater cast - well, at least Johnny is Great! :)

I consider it a "chick" movie, but i can see no reason why men wouldn't enjoy it too. The actors are very appealing, all of them, even the ones you don't wish to like. I felt it was a great study on life following wwII, the attitudes of people, the wish for piety, even if misplaced, but maybe to be desired in this day and age also. I watch this movie about twice a year.

When I first mentioned to my guy that I wanted to watch it, he groaned and begged to do something - anything - else. He didn't want to watch a "chick flick". But within the first ten minutes of the film, the story had drawn us both in, he for the first time and me for the second. There are many reasons to love this movie. The cast is world-class, the scenery is amazing, the music is haunting, and the story is enchanting. It is a modern fable, with a very important moral or lesson. The heroine, Vianne (Juliette Binoche), is a person with independent thoughts and room to grow. She has much to teach and much to learn, which makes her easy to identify with. Johnny Depp - okay, who doesn't like Johnny Depp? - plays a very different kind of pirate. His musical contribution is a hidden treasure within the film score. Each character comes with his or her own storyline, background and influence, and each was brilliantly cast. All characters, institutions and positions are susceptible to both error and praise. And, like real life, the plot advances quickly, calling upon a range of emotion and experience. A final thought: I would not recommend watching this movie in a chocolate-free zone. For hard-core chocoholics, a $1 candy bar will not suffice. This is the time to gear up with the specialty chocolates. For an extra-special (and appropriate) treat, try adding a pinch of cayenne pepper & cinnamon to hot chocolate or mocha. Enjoy!
