This is Blues at it's dirtiest. Wonderful collection of music and musicians. Buddy Guy is referenced over and again in publication and by other artists, but does not have a lot of recordings. On this album Robin Trower and Eric Clapton play backup--that's right--backup! When Buddy Sings the lyrics, even to the standards, you know that it is his song and his pain. His guitar work only accentuate that. It almost makes you feel like scratching and howling mournfully. I especially like the Piece "Five Long Years"--referring to the time that the character worked for this woman who then cold-heartedly threw his butt out. But as one of my female friends pointed out--What about the story of the woman that had supported him for the additional 20 years when he wasn't working? (A woman might look at it that way if she didn't understand the blues.) If you love the Down and Dirty Blues at it's most painful, this is it, Presented only as this Guy can do it! | |
