King has written dozens of #1 bestsellers, some unforgettable and others forgettable, but with this new horror story I think he may be back on track like years before! This book takes on new ground for Mr. King. Hope to see a movie out of it. The book explores an eerie stretch of Florida coast where Edgar Freemantle has come to build his life after an accident that cost him his arm and head injuries that leave him prone to uncontrollable rages and memory lapses. He ends up in Duma Key only because his Dr. felt he needed a change of place, a geographical cure. Edgar hopes that while here in Duma Key he can pick up the painting he use to love in his younger years. What he discovers, is that his talent is more powerful than he remembered. By that, it means that the things he paints become real! He also discovers that if he removes something from a painting, it will disappear in real life. Even people. He finally realizes that his newfound abilities are somehow tied to his elderly landlady, Elizabeth, but when the ghost of her past begin to appear, the real truth about his talent becomes quite terrifying. Now he must deal with the dark side of his talent. | |

The endings usually have to be so horrific and complicated as to be totally unbelievable and unenjoyable -- instead of just far-fetched. This book, however,contained two really great characters who were fully developed by King -- and the ending was not so terribly ridiculous. Had almost given up reading Stephen King -- but I am very happy I gave him one more try! | |

After an accident that severly disables him he moves to Duma Key in Florida where he takes up painting and finds out that his paintings have the ability of coming true. Without giving too much away, I think this would be a very good book for any King fan, especially a vintage King reader. | |

I am a die-hard Stephen King fan and will read any of his books. He is a great author with a great imagination. I am excited to really get into this book. | |

At over 600 pages this novel will keep you involved in th story every step along the way. I got lost in Mr. King's world as I visited Duma Key. The characters are so well drawn you actually feel as if you know them. The story is distrubing but always leaves you wondering if this could reallly happen. Better then Cell. Great work! | |

I enjoyed it very much and even though I am employed full time, I still finished it in 2 days. It is not a horror book, but it is full of imagination, very descriptive and a very fast read. It keeps you interested in the story and pulls you into the book as if you were there. I highly recommend it and believe that anyone who reads it enjoys it as much as I did. | |

I felt he had left his best creative work behind and was just using boilerplate ideas to keep the rabid fan spending money. This novel is totally different and if I did not know the author's name, I would never have guessed King. The story elegantly moves along and as the horror begins to unfold, it opens like a flower, petal by petal, until you reach the core. I have not quite finished and am at the point where I can see the King brush strokes, only gently building to completion, not a cold slap in your face. I feel this is his best work I have encountered, because unlike Stand, Pet Cemetary, etc, you can actually see this happening to you. Reality fiction! | |

Interesting incorporation of his own experience of being involved in a life altering accident. You can really get inside the main character's head and understand what he's feeling.
