Record Label: Rounder Records
Genre: Rock & Pop

Those who find the pairing of '70s rock god Robert Plant with contemporary bluegrass queen Alison Krauss unlikely have probably not been paying attention to Plant's latter-day work, which is full of intimate, acoustic-flavored balladry. While the organic-sounding, low-key Plant/Krauss collaboration, RAISING SAND, is a far cry from Led Zeppelin's stadium rock, it offers up some hauntingly moody textures that should appeal to "Battle of Evermore" admirers. Strangely wonderful
by: petermmcc (166Feedback is 100 to 499) Review created: 09/05/08

Granted, this is not a CD you pop in to the player and start dancing. If that's what you are looking for, look elsewhere (and why you'd think you get that from Ms. Krauss, a bluegrass icon and Mr. Plant, a hard rock god is a very ponderous question). This is a musical "experience" CD whereby two very talented vocalists run through a repertoire of all covers, selected by an iconoclast's iconoclast with musical accompaniment provided by some of the best session men in the business. T-Bone Burnett, who produced this disc, finds an oddly perfect pitch in this combination. Whereas this could be just a run through of some tried and true classics that builds cachet just from the unique pairing of Ms. Krauss and Mr. Plant, Mr. Burnett instead instills a sense of reverence, beauty and wonder with the arrangements of the songs and the delicacy of the recording. Of course, there is irrevence at times, especially when Ms. Krauss delivers an unorthodox first person performance of a vocal intended for a male singer ("Through the Morning, Through the Night") and the duo tackles Mr. Plant's recent, obscure "Please Read the Letter" in a way that makes it seem like an ancient classic. The best song on the disc is "Killing the Blues" whose title signifies the genre busting approach of this collaboration- these people are just creating beautiful, evocative music that echoes and recalls the melange of backgrounds and approaches of all the contributors. By not adhering to the rules, however, they create something that challenges the listener to take the music on its intrinsic value alone without concern for the dogma or discipline of any one genre or approach. Each song has its own familiar yet odd feel, like you've heard it before but not exactly in the way you are hearing it now. Don't buy this unless you like to hear something new and fresh- if you have an idea about how this will sound based on your previous impressions of Ms. Krauss and Mr. Plant, let me suggest that you will probably not hear what you were expecting. You will hear something better, you will hear the performances and the music like you've never heard before.

Go see them in concert first (or any musician) then LISTEN to the recording ..and be there again!

(this is a filler because this site requires you to use 100 characters or more to submit - talk about control)
I don't need to say anything more than I did!

Alison and Robert matched well
by: stox2bondz (913Feedback is 500 to 999) Review created: 08/05/08

This CD slowed me down to a crawl as I listened to the haunting melodies. Alison Krauss and Robert Plant harmonize nicely (ala Everly Brothers on methadone).
I enjoyed the opening tune as well as the Jimmy Page "I Nailed a Letter" immensely. Not what I expected at all but professionally done and very pleasant.
Now I have to get a double espresso and get moving.

Creative Excellence from two legends!
by: iban12n6 (5) Review created: 07/03/08

I would have given it an Excellent rating, but it's not my favorite kind of music so I just can't do that. The musicianship is incredibly creative which is my favorite part. It gets annoying with Alison singing on songs that should be sung by a guy. Maybe some can get past that, but I just can't do it althought I have tried.

Great Album...if you know what you are getting
by: sloopy_79 (31Feedback is 10 to 49) Review created: 06/27/08

I am a huge fan of both Alison Krauss and Robert Plant/Led Zeppelin. If you are looking for a lot of Led Zeppelin in this album, you are going to be disappointed. If you are looking for a lot of Alison Krauss and Union Station in this album, you are going to be disappointed. If you are open to a fresh new collaboration that sounds nothing like anything you have ever heard before, you are in for a treat.

I can totally understand why this album is so polarizing. It sounds nothing like the solo efforts of Krauss or Plant. Fans of Krauss will enjoy her vocals on "Trampled Rose", "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson" and "Sister Rosetta". Fans of Plant will enjoy "Gone Gone Gone", "Fortune Teller", and "Please Read the Letter" (a song written by Page and Plant in the Zeppelin days). Both artists have stepped outside their comfort zone a bit, but they work well together. There are a couple of slow moments in the album, but they are overshadowed by the highlights.

Approach this album with an open mind, and you can appreciate what Krauss and Plant have done. Go into it expecting the "same old, same old" from them, and you will hate it.

Raising Sand cd Allison Krauss/Robert Plant
by: bucko0 (489Feedback is 100 to 499) Review created: 06/22/08

Moody/romantic/soulful/yet upbeat on other tracks. One of the most wondrous cds ever purchased. Saw Krauss in person after "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou?" came out and am constantly amazed by the way her style evolves, the range of her talent, the clarity of a voice that sounds so etheral when singing about themes that all can relate to in their lives. So hoping that Krauss and Plant do more cds together...Loved this so much purchased a second one for the car since was carrying it in and out of the house. Also purchased one for amazing couple with whom friends who so typify the true meaning of love and what marriage can/should be...

Raising Sand
by: 100kittykat (13Feedback is 10 to 49) Review created: 06/08/08

I love this cd. It's a different side to Robert Plant. I have always loved him in Led Zepplin (House of the Holy), so this was just another facet of him that I new I would love. Alison Krauss is also wonderful. The two voices together are a perfect match.
I am so happy that I bought this cd. I recommend it to everyone....

Kraus & Plant Outstanding Together
by: fanaticbooks (643Feedback is 500 to 999) Review created: 05/09/08

I have thoroughly enjoyed the combination of these two voices. This whole album is great for the quiet times when a good book and a roaring fire with a glass of wine means relaxation. Their voices blend to create a whole that causes me to pause and enjoy the harmonics. I feel it was worth every penny I spent after discovering them via YouTube. If you are looking for rock and roll, you will not find it here. Instead you will find appreciation for two fine voices controlling your interest without disguises from background instruments. Instead the instrumentals enhance the power and control these two give to every song. I would LOVE to hear more from these two together. Nancy, an eclectic music lover
