Johnny Depp Excells in a Stephen King Mystery

What I could call a psychological suspense akin to old Alfred Hitchcock films, "Secret Window," is based on a Stephen King novella of a different kind. The story begins with a sloppy avant garde writer, Mort Rainey (Johnny Depp), an alcoholic & cigarette addict because he feels like his life's out of his own control: after his wife (Maria Bello) betrays & leaves him. He quits writing. He acts depressed & as if he feels worthless. While Mort is super strung out, showing signs of falling apart emotionally, a weird Southern stranger, (John Shooter), claims that Mort has plagiarized one of his stories. Since Shooter seems like an ignorant buffoon, it's hard to imagine he can even spell let alone compose a publishable story. Shooter is way beyond the edge of deranged & attempts to drive Mort to the brink of insanity. Mort's wife is equally crazy-making as she, along with her adulterous lover, try their best to press Depp into an unwanted divorce to be finalized. Rainey descends into insanity with such maneuvers that us into the darkest recesses of his character's mind. Like a Hitchcock film, King's focus is on the characters themselves, instead of his usual special spooky effects. Thus, this is a thriller with a totally surprise ending. A must see. Bring popcorn~

He hears a noise from somewhere behind him, spins around, and suddenly realizes it was just his imagination. He sighs, puts down the weapon, turns around, and BOO! There's the bad guy, who has somehow managed to enter the locked home and avoid being detected. What if, I wonder, one of these times, the bad guy was seen as he entered? What if the Fisherman from "I Know What You Did Last Summer" had been spotted, and confronted, by one of the teenagers? What if Norman Bates' "Mother" had been exposed from the start? Then there presumably would be no movie, of course. I could criticize the "twist" of the movie and say that it has become one of the most overused solutions to Hollywood film thriller/mysteries of the past decade, but I won't spoil it, and let you decide for yourself whether it does the story justice

18 out of 32 people found the following review helpful. Written by Stephen King, main actor Johnny Depp, this is one of my favorite movie, film partially in my home town North Hatley, Qc. Canada. A small town in the Eastern township. With a beautiful scenery and the reflection of the trees in the lake when the sun come goes down at night. In the movie you see Johnny in a General Store, the general store is standing in the middle of the village looking at the shore of lake Massawippi. Another great architecture, in the movie, is the post office, which was at one time the C.I.B.C (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce). the village was built in the 1800 hundred by Colonel Hovey. It was the perfect place for such a movie. chow.

The Depster strikes again!

His skill combined with the rest of the cast and the crew on this movie made for a delightful and shivery adventure. Not everyone agrees on this movie, that's for sure. But I think it's a work of art.

I just couldn't get into the story line and found it confusing it at times. Johnny Depp did a great job acting in the movie and the ending was good. That was about it for me. There are a lot of slow moving parts and some things that are just down right confusing. Usually everything comes together at the end of Stephen King movies but this just didn't for me. I would recommend seeing it though if you are a Stephen King or Johnny Depp fan.

Depp at his best

Then when the twist happens I thought is was actually kind of funny. make sure that you watch the Cut out scenes at the very end. They really actually pull the film together for me. I will not give away the twist, but you will really like it.

He comes across very believeable, you really feel the depth of his pain, and neurosis in this film. This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat right to the last frame.

A bit of a weird moving and leaves u guessing till the end but loved it love Johnny Depp in everything he does. A definite buy it and keep it movie.

5 out of 10 people found the following review helpful. You have to love Jonnie Depp and what he brings to a film. This is about a writer who falls on some times that are rather hard to deal with. He becomes obsessed with one of his stories and "fixing the ending" unfortunately for his cheating wife, this means she will have to die. Very well written, keeps you guessing, at the end you may even have to stop and take a minute to diguest everything. The word pilgrim will take on a whole new meaning for you after watching this!
