Album Notes
Blake Babies: John Strohm (vocals, guitar); Juliana Hatfield (vocals, bass); Freda Boner (drums).
Recorded at Fort Apache, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The Blake Babies' third and final full-length album is the band's masterpiece, as well as one of the archetypal albums of pre-grunge American indie-pop. Singer/bassist Juliana Hatfield, guitarist John P. Strohm, and drummer Freda Love (here renamed Freda Boner) concoct 12 near-perfect pop songs full of jangling and buzzing guitars, hook-filled melodies, and intelligent, thought-provoking lyrics.
Hatfield's songs range from the withering disdain of "I'm Not Your Mother" to the sweetly wistful "Out There"-probably the band's finest three minutes-and "Watch Me Now, I'm Calling," a disturbing portrait of self-mutilation. Strohm makes his vocal debut with the equally disconcerting "Girl In A Box" and the anthemic "Train," the latter referencing both Elvis Presley's "Mystery Train" and Modern English's "I Melt With You." This 1990 album both summarizes 80s indie-pop and forecasts where the music, as well as the soon-to-split Blake Babies, would follow in the next decade.
