I can't imagine a lawyer who has a career that is on the way to the stars give it up to work full time for the down and out people of this world. Just hard to relate to or believe. So was the ending, that I don't want to give away.

Grisham did his ressearch on this novel. Having spent 35 years as a social worker on the streets, it rang true in background and character development. I felt I knew the characters and all their strenthes and weaknesses. And as seems his style, one isn't sure till the very end where and how it will all come together. Grisham's knowledge of the law and the culture of lawyers is obvious, but he leads the reader into this world and helps us understand it, and appreciate both strength and weaknesses. I was brought to this author through his "King of Torts", and I have been a fan ever since. And this novel didn't disappoint me in the least. He has the ability to make you want to read just one more chapter, no matter how late the hour, especially the last 50 pages. His social commentary is obvious without being preachy. Though written in 1998, it still rings true in 2008, the complete abadonment of services and concern for some of the neediest of our citizens. Of all the characters I met in this novel, Mordeci Green would be the one I would want to meet the most. While not the main character, he is a driving force throughout the book. A relaxing read yet one that makes you think and ponder.
